Wildfire Prevention Measures Must Be a Priority in Preparation for This Year's Fire Season
Fire Season is already upon us! Shamrock Landscape Co can help you protect your property from wildfires by creating and maintaining a defensible space around your home through our fire prevention mowing service. If you live in a rural area or an area bordering open space, creating a defensible space – as mandated by Cal Fire and your local Fire Marshall – is essential to improve your property’s chance of surviving a wildfire with little or no damage.
We will create a buffer between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it; in accordance with Cal Fire recommendations. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it protects your home from catching fire – either from direct flame contact or radiant heat. What’s more, defensible space is also crucial for the protection of the firefighters defending your home.
Don’t be a victim, rather be prepared. Just give us a call.
Tips on How to Protect your Property from Fire Danger
1) Create a Defensible Space of 100 feet around your home — It is required by law
- Create a “LEAN, CLEAN and GREEN ZONE” by removing all flammable vegetation within 30 feet immediately surrounding your home
- Create horizontal and vertical spacing between plants. The amount of space will depend on how steep your property is and the size of your plants. Large trees do not have to be removed as long as all of the plants beneath them are removed.
- Remove lower tree branches at least six feet from the ground
- Landscape with fire resistant plants
- Maintain all plants with regular water, and keep dead branches, leaves and needles removed.
- When clearing vegetation, use care when operating equipment such as lawnmowers. One small spark may start a fire; a string trimmer is much safer.
2) Fireproof Your Home
- Use ignition resistant materials for roofing, eaves, shutters, window frames, etc.
- Enclose the underside of eaves, balconies and above ground decks with fire resistant materials
- Consider installing residential sprinklers
- Remove dead leaves and needles from your roof and gutters
- Remove dead branches overhanging your roof and keep branches 10 feet from your chimney.
Although our focus is only on creating a defensible space around your property we hope these tips were helpful to you.
